As an Engineering Technician assigned to a field organization, the incumbent is responsible for infrastructure sustainment activities throughout the Service Area/NASEO. Engineering Technicians (ET's) contribute to the organization in the support role for Systems Support Centers. Performs a mix of routine and varying assignments associated with various general and specialized trade skills, including but not limited to electrical, carpentry, painting, concrete, plumbing, welding, and drywall.
Responsible for developing supply estimates for various projects, gathering technical data, evaluating/formulating safety procedures, determining manpower, and material and fiscal requirements for assigned projects. May assist a project coordinator in planning, cost estimating, designing, developing, and completing local projects. In addition, must be capable of learning airport layouts and have the ability to navigate safely throughout Airport Operations Areas. Possess a working knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures pertaining to the construction work environment, i.e., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), facility, system, and equipment security, Environmental Compliance Assessment Protocol (ECAP), and National Electrical Code (NEC). Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and structural systems to perform duties as assigned, and is required to periodically interpret construction and building blue prints. Applies experience and detailed technical construction knowledge in order to plan and complete assignments in support of National Airspace System (NAS). Project contracts include, but are not limited to District Office(s), other FAA organizations, local airport authority, and contractors. May provide on-the-job training to developmental technicians.
Contacts are made to share information, provide data, furnish technical guidance, and discuss the status of the assignment. These contacts are internal and external, but are limited to the scope of the employee's work. Maintenance of the structure surrounding a facility, such as the landscaping, fence, and gates can also fall within the scope of duties.
The work contributes to the activities of the organizational unit and supports activities that are critical to the safe and continual operation of the NAS, FAA aircraft, and/or FAA academic programs.
Performs routine assignments independently, receiving little or no technical guidance. Supervisor furnishes general instructions on the scope of work, time limitations, and priorities. Technical manuals, manufacturers' instructions, FAA procedures, and other publications provide guidance for most assignments. Some judgment is required in selecting the most appropriate approach. Supervisors, team leaders, or more experienced technicians are available to provide guidance. Independently performs routine assignments. Work is reviewed to an extent consistent with the complexity of the assignment.
OPM Individual Occupational Requirements for Engineering Technical Series in conjunction with Group Coverage Qualifications Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions. To qualify for this position at the FV-G level you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-F, FG/GS-9 and below level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience may include, but is not limited to: the knowledge of the fundamentals of Engineering Technician (ET) work, i.e., using a variety of trade skills such as electrical, carpentry, painting, concrete, plumbing, welding and drywall; interpreting diagrams, specifications, manuals, and supply/cost estimates.

Working Conditions of Employment: Travel up to 50% of the time. Work assignments can be physical and strenuous in nature. Duties may include climbing, lifting up to 30 pounds, walking up several flights of stairs, working on elevated surfaces, and/or working in outdoor environments.
