Develops and executes programs in areas including: radiation safety, asbestos, hearing conservation, mold management, indoor air quality, ergonomics, blood-borne pathogens, occupational medical surveillance, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, first aid/CPR/AED, general industrial hygiene, hazardous chemicals, confined space and other industrial/environmental health programs. Provides the following services as part of the development and execution of technical programs: Provides leadership and guidance on performing in-depth monitoring, testing, and sampling for various health hazards. Provides direction to field managers ensuring all plans and programs incorporate federal and state mandated health and safety standards into work procedures and facilities. Participates as the recognized industrial hygienist on committees, bargaining unit actions, and represents the FAA at national policy forums. Researches and prepares actions to eliminate or control health hazards through new technology, improved procedures, and/or administrative controls. Reviews contractor technical reports/lab results, analyzes the data and determines the validity of findings and recommendations. Incumbent is the Eastern Service Area' s staff industrial hygienist to advise field managers on health risks, and proper responses to identified hazards. Conducts industrial hygiene sampling using; photoionization detectors, gas detectors, air sampling pumps, dust monitoring equipment, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation monitors, and other state of the art monitoring equipment. Directs and manages all health and industrial hygiene program objectives and goals for the Eastern Service Area. Provides consultation services to other Occupational Safety and Health specialists, Requirements specialists, and engineers. Develops and delivers training on asbestos operations and maintenance and other industrial hygiene related topics. Advises, prepares and presents key health and industrial hygiene initiatives to the Eastern Service Area Directors and senior management officials.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the specialized experience required for the position. You must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I, FG/GS-13 in the Federal Service.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience may include but not limited to: performing in-depth monitoring, testing and sampling for various health hazards and developing and delivering training on asbestos operations and maintenance and other industrial hygiene related topics.
Qualifying experience involves the recognition, evaluation, corrective actions, and elimination of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls.
Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.

1)A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;
OR
2)A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
OR
3)Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
