This position is located in the Southeast Alaska Network of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. The Southeast Alaska Network supports Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Sitka National Historical Park, and coastal portions of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. These park units harbor some of the most significant glaciers in North America and the World, offering unparalleled opportunities for the study of climate change and glaciology.
The Southeast Alaska Network Ecologist has a quantitative analyses focus and will be responsible for helping to design and implement rigorous statistical designs and analyses for the network's individual monitoring programs including, but not limited to, climate, glaciers, oceanographic conditions, water quality, streamflow, environmental contaminants, and marine wildlife (including sea otters, harbor seals, murrelets, and benthic invertebrate communities). The Ecologist will have a central role in the integration of diverse monitoring datasets to advance a holistic understanding of park ecosystems and inform park management. As a member of a local and regional science team, the Ecologist will collaborate with individual monitoring program leads and external partners to complete design and analysis projects. The Ecologist will also be shared with Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, providing technical assistance to the park on statistical design and analysis projects.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for occasional telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
