The Clinical Care Nurse Educator will assess, plan, design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate educational offerings to clinically-active VANCHCS staff. He/she assists in the development and administration of simulation programs, initiation of computer-based training and other educational technologies for innovative approaches in training and education for clinical Nursing staff at all levels. He/she provides education/training in the Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency and Transition to Practice programs in the Preceptor Academy. The Nurse Educator is expected to exhibit leadership in professional nursing by serving on committees, providing mentorship to professional Nurses, student Nurses and Nurse residents and contribute to his/her own self-development. This position is composed of an education component, unit specific competencies, and a performance component.
1. Maintains professional relationships with colleagues in the Nursing Education Department, Nursing Faculty and other personnel throughout the organization.
2. Works closely with Nursing Education colleagues in East Bay and Sacramento Valley to develop, standardize and administer Nursing Education programs throughout the organization and is responsible to have a working knowledge of all active programs and the flexibility to travel to any NCHCS site to deliver education, training and orientation to Nursing personnel on all programs offered.
3. Takes responsibility for leadership and staff assistance in the administration and operationalization of programs that include but are not limited to: Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency (PBNR) Transition to Practice (TTP), New Nurse Orientation, the Preceptor Course, Scholarship Programs, Competency Verification, administration of Simulation training scenarios and care of equipment, maintenance and currency of the Nursing Education Web site and SharePoint.
4. Works closely with the Nurse Managers and staff on the units/clinics assigned, and other Educators providing personal expertise and experience to establish specialized training.
assistance and input to competency assignments, monthly tracking of competencies and development of annual Education Plan for each area assigned (due to the Chief Nurse by 1 November annually).
5. Makes rounds and maintains high visibility in all areas assigned, responding to requests of the Nurse Managers and staff, seeking issues that may require immediate training for individuals or groups, providing opportunities to set up Simulation scenarios and provide on-the-spot training when necessary.
6. Works closely with Urgent Care Managers throughout NCHCS to assist with training and currency of Nursing personnel within their Scopes of Service (which dictates Scope of Practice) at each facility.
5. Consistently follows our Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning (SAIL) Value Model reports, acting immediately in collaboration with the Nurse Managers and unit staff, to increase or maintain high scores for efficiency, patient safety measures and quality of care.
6. Follows the tracking toward completion of assigned competencies, ACLS, BLS and Nursing license expiration dates for assigned units and works continuously with Nurse Managers to stay on track. Goal is 100% competencies completed by 15 September annually. Performance measure is 90% completion with action plan for make-up within 1 month of end of fiscal year (by 31 October annually)
7. Embodies the highest level of professionalism, integrity and staff/Veteran confidentiality in all interactions, assuring Nurse Manager/staff/Veteran and Family confidence and satisfaction during all encounters with the VANCHCS Nursing Education Department.
8. Works in collaboration with each Nurse Manager and his/her staff to review competency folders for currency and completeness on quarterly basis.
9. Assists or covers in the absence of other Clinical Nurse Educators when requested or necessary. Works with Nursing Education team to cover vacancies or other absences.
10. Consistently advises supervisor of any deviations or issues arising in any of his/her assigned areas.
11. Assumes patient care load when needed to ensure full operational needs of units and organization.
