The incumbent of this position will perform the following duties:
Conducts studies or monitoring protocols to determine status and trends of landlocked Atlantic salmon, and other native fish species to Lake Champlain. This involves sampling of juvenile and adult salmon to determine their distribution and abundance in rivers using backpack electroshocking, snorkeling and spawning (redd) surveys. Leads field crews and makes effective decisions with safety and end project goals in mind.
Proposes, designs and modifies protocols to determine fish population status and trends. Develops data collection protocols and standards for data collection and post-processing. Monitors and validates data collection and accuracy to ensure that standards are met in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices.
Conducts statistical analysis and database management of large and complex fisheries datasets. Maintains large and complex fisheries database using database programs (i.e., Oracle, SQL, Microsoft Access). Uses geographic information software (GIS) in an integrated way with fisheries and habitat data. Analyzes large and complex fisheries data sets for assessment using statistical platforms (i.e., R or SAS). Uses modeling approaches to determine distribution and abundance of fish (i.e., occupancy modeling and mark and recapture analysis). Develops computer programs and subroutines to analyze a variety of physical and biological data.
Responsible for final collation and editing of scientific reports and manuscripts for submission to the funding and/or scientific journals. Instructs and trains temporary and/or seasonal employees in proper scientific collection techniques. Informs and instructs cooperating agencies on techniques developed under protocol when interagency cooperative work is required. Gives oral presentations on study findings at fisheries technical or professional meetings.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
