WHAT DOES A STATISTICIAN DO? Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Statisticians design and execute statistical studies of various filing populations, including individuals, corporations, partnerships, tax-exempt organizations, and international taxpayers. The estimates developed by Statisticians are used by staff in the Treasury department and the US Congress to examine the potential and actual impacts of tax policy decisions and to perform revenue estimation. Statistics and micro-level data are also used in the development of various National economic indicators. Statisticians also prepare tables, data visualizations, analysis, publications, and reports that provide accessible information on the tax system to the public. They may design samples of specific filing populations using administrative data, apply advanced disclosure techniques to protect taxpayer privacy in published statistics, or develop weight and sampling error estimates for samples. Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Statisticians work to apply statistical analysis to solve problems faced by the IRS in administering the tax code. Working independently or on a team, Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Statisticians select statistical methodologies and use software programs to analyze large datasets. Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Statisticians support senior decision makers at IRS, the Department of the Treasury, and Congress.
As a Statistician you will:

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: You must have a Bachelor’s degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. OR A combination of education and experience which includes courses shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In addition to the above, you must meet the requirements described below:
GS-13 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience which demonstrates the ability to independently lead research and social science projects requiring advanced mathematical and statistical knowledge pertinent to the position to be filled. This knowledge is further demonstrated by assignments where the applicant independently managed high-level, complex studies using well-established methods for identifying the probable causes of statistical variances and drafting recommendations for resolving or mitigating such variances. The resolution of identified areas includes communicating findings through written and oral methods to audiences across multiple grades and levels of responsibility. Prior work assignments would generally include using specialized methodologies (e.g., applied mathematics, statistics, demography, or econometrics) to appropriately address varied quantitative and qualitative challenges by developing computerized mathematical models, regression models or applied demographic projections.
