Serves as RDECOM Laser Safety Officer and a technical expert for radiofrequency, radar and microwave safety for on-post operations, and provides system safety assessments of laser, radiofrequency, radar and microwave systems under development for incorporation into various weapon systems in direct support of the RDECOM organizations. Also serves as primary alternate Radiation Protection Officer for the RDECOM Radiation Protection Program. In addition, as a health physicist independently manages other specifically assigned sub-programs of RDECOM RDECs/Labs Radiation Protection Program, which encompasses radioactive material, X-ray, laser and other non-ionizing radiation operations.
Successful performance requires a general understanding of RDECOM missions, functions, operations, activities, facilities, equipment and capabilities as well as a thorough understanding of techniques for detecting, measuring and evaluating ionizing and non-ionizing radiation both inside and outside the body; knowledge of the interaction of various forms of radiation with body tissue; knowledge of the pertinent regulations, standards, and guides for protecting personnel and the public from radiation hazards; knowledge of the theories, principles and application of radiation chemistry / biophysics; ability to evaluate the significance of the various types of radiation exposure and their degree in relation to permissible radiation exposure limits; ability to determine satisfactory radiation shielding requirements under given storage / usage situations; knowledge of appropriate radioactive waste disposal and decontamination procedures; knowledge of procedures and requirements for sorting, handling, and shipping radioactive material; knowledge of the appropriate use, limitations, and calibration of radiation detection and analytical equipment utilized in carrying out the RDECOM mission. Keeps abreast of new developments, techniques, and findings in the discipline of radiological safety, including laser safety, through review of recent literature and regulations, and attendance at appropriate courses and symposia.
