The Park Ranger administers operations, such as day-to-day operation of a recreation site, that involves onsite decisions and judgments; carries out resource management or protection work, such as evaluation of resource conditions, or enforcement of use requirements, that requires skills and judgment to obtain desired results; and makes group and individual contacts to provide information or answer questions about their assigned area of work such as recreational activities or historical, cultural, or natural site information. Presents a positive image of the area and of the BLM; ensuring visitor contact is conducted in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner. Patrols and inspects facilities ensuring compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, and safety. Conducts safety inspections and records visitor-related incidents. Meets with visitors to provide information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, site use opportunities and limitations, and park activities. Ensures protection of property from visitor-related depredation. Coordinates with the Volunteer Coordinator in meeting volunteer program goals and objectives. Drafts correspondence to respond to visitor inquires (to include walk-ins), and answers telephones. Presents a variety of formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs. Assists in gathering and analyzing data related to existing recreational resources to recognize prominent trends. Assists in the performance of day-to-day operations at a visitor center or customer use area that provide facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and/or other specialized recreational opportunities. Performs routine facility maintenance and/or repair.

Specialized Experience: Experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Serving as a park guide/tour leader or serving as a Management, assistant, or program specialist performing work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations: Assisting in patrolling trails and recreation areas to include: inspecting facilities; aiding in ensuring compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, and safety; providing customer service and assistance in helping to run facilities, (e.g. Visitor, Recreation, Interpretation, etc.), to include collecting fees, advising visitors concerning safety, amenities available, performing maintenance, and proper and authorized use of facilities; and conducting interpretive talks and guided tour programs. The definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages

BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to serve as a Park Ranger for two National Monuments in the Las Cruces District Office.
The BLM manages more land - 245 million surface acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The BLM, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
