The incumbent receives fire reports, determines location, land status, and current fire information in order to dispatch personnel, equipment, aircraft and/or supplies according to pre-defined plans or in response to resource orders from the field. Based upon prior wildland firefighting experience and training anticipates needs and makes recommendations regarding orders or anticipated orders. Maintains resource status and tracking systems and operates telecommunication systems. Collects, processes, collates and submits incident information to support fire operations. Records and maintains communication logs. Coordinates and may assist with fire training and orientation. Inputs data into a number of fire-related computer applications and makes initial assessment of outputs.
Physical Demands: The work involves long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. The duties of this position create a highly stressful environment during peak activity, requiring the ability to keep calm in emergency situations. Must be able to cope with the pressure of meeting timeframes and changing priorities. Mental concentration and accuracy are required.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting. During peak activity, increased radio traffic, numerous ringing phones, and conversations result in high noise levels, which require a high level of concentration to perform duties. This creates a high stress work environment.

Specialized Experience Requirements:
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
For GS-04 six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience, or 2 years of education beyond high school with related courses. Examples of specialized experience include being a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress wildland fires, which consists of fireline construction, use of pumps and engines, working in and around aircraft. Chop brush, patrol firelines, assist other personnel with more specialized assignments such as dispatch operations, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
For GS-05 one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the federal service, or a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the position. Examples of specialized experience: Serve as a seasonal dispatcher for support and coordination for activities including preparedness, fuels management, suppression of wildfires, aviation flight following and tracking, administrative support and natural disaster support. Implement mobilization, demobilization, logistics support and reassignment of fire management resources necessary to support initial attack, emergency fire suppression, and fuels management operations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
