The Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who utilizes the nursing process to assess, coordinate, facilitate and deliver nursing care to GI Services patients throughout the Northern California VA System. Formulates an interdisciplinary plan of care and documents assignments, interventions, and referrals in the computerized patient record system, meeting CPG/PI indicators. Responsible for educating patients and family members. Responsible for the delivery of all aspects of patient care including procedural sedation and serves as resource to the GI Services.
The GI RN is adaptable to function in pre, intra, and post procedural roles and utilizes the most current evidence to direct practice. These roles include; administration of moderate sedation, assisting in with General Anesthesia procedural cases and recovery, carrying out physician orders, administers medications with a focus on intravenous infusions for GI diseases, application of dressings, monitor vital signs, assists physician during examination procedures and complete nursing assessment pre and post procedure etc. The RN in coordination with technicians and LVN/LPNs must understand all components of standard precautions, PPE, setting up procedure rooms with respect to sterility, cleanliness, availability of functioning endoscopic equipment and supplies. The GI RN is the primary coordinator of all disciplines to ensure a well-coordinated patient care plan is implemented and a high standard of care is provided. The RN must be competent in monitoring, recording, documenting and communicating patient conditions to the healthcare team and the utilization of the electronic medical health record. The RN will be required to instruct and educate patient and families regarding pre- op teaching and discharge planning. This includes the assessment and coordination of the patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team. The RN provides age and culturally appropriate care for all patient who access care though the GI services. The RN will orient and mentors new staff members. Care and preparation of pre- and post GI procedure patients. Demonstrates abilities in establishment of priorities and time management required. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse interdisciplinary fast paced work environment required.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 10 hr shifts (40hrs/week)
