The purpose of the position is to deliver high quality healthcare services in a timely fashion that upholds best nursing practices and recognizes the individual needs and preferences of each Veteran and their family. Pursuant to the demand of this specialty area, the Licensed Practical Nurse will function primarily independently with minimal supervision of the professional nurse and therefore must demonstrate of highly specialized clinical skills, strong clinical judgment and strong observation skills. The individual must demonstrate professional, interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for public relations and provide excellent customer service. The Licensed Practical Nurse will work collaboratively towards achieving VAPHS performance, patient satisfaction goals, and other objectives as delineated by the VA.
The Licensed Practical Nurse serves as a member of the clinic staff for Department of Medicine in the Rainbow Clinic at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center. Specialties included within the Rainbow Clinic currently include (but may not be limited to) cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, pulmonary, rheumatology, nephrology, hepatology, oncology and palliative care. The successful candidate must accurately apply nursing knowledge along with medical center policies and procedures to his/her daily clinical functions and responsibilities. The following are the major duties and responsibilities, which are not encompassing and may have other duties and responsibilities as appropriate for the position.
Administrative
1. Responsible for review of physician orders (includes labs, EKGs, etc.) prior to the intake of all patients.
2. Responsible for utilizing sound judgment to prioritize patients with acute medical needs and ensure they are seen in a timely manner.
3. Participates in improving patient flow in the clinic. This includes receiving patients/family members in a timely manner, providing clear directions to assist patient with navigation during their visit, and securing or providing escort assistance when necessary.
4. Responsible for thorough documentation in the electronic medical record as well as record maintenance in the clinic as necessary.
5. Responsible for safeguarding patient information during the appointment visit in accordance with HIPAA, the Privacy Act and medical confidentiality regulations.
Clinical
1. The Licensed Practical Nurse provides clinical support and assists physicians and nurses as needed. Duties include, but are not limited to: initial patient intake, obtaining and documenting vital signs, performing EKG's, preparation of patient for examination, administration of vaccines, administration of allergy injections and assistance with various treatments and procedures. All abnormal results will be reported to the provider or RN immediately.
2. The Licensed Practical Nurse is required to maintain BLS certification. He/she participates and/or assists physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses in any patient medical emergency and must comply with existing fire, safety, hazardous material and other occupational health and safety policies and regulations.
3. Must be knowledgeable of and practice standard precautions in all patient contacts, including infection control. Reusable medical equipment will be cleaned and stored according to facility policy.
4. Collects, labels, and processes a variety of specimens (drawing blood by means of venipuncture, obtaining urine and other specimens) as necessary.
5. Must be proficient to perform a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (electrocardiograms, glucose monitoring, dressing changes, bladder scans, oxygen administration, urinary catheterization, suture removal), and routine lab tests as necessary.
6. Maintains examination rooms with medical supplies and forms. Supplies are ordered from SPD as needed. Ensures that equipment is checked for proper functioning prior to use each day. Assesses rooms at the end of clinic and removes patient identifiers.
7. Prepares and administers medications, performs allergy injections and administers vaccines correctly fully understanding the action and side effects of all medications administered. Observes for changes in patient's condition from prescribed medications/treatments, promptly and accurately documenting noted changes, and reports any deviations from normal to provider or RN.
Communication
1. Communicates with patients and families in a calming, reassuring, and supportive manner.
2. Recognizes patient care management difficulties or problems, and makes suggestions for change
3. Motivates patients to participate in learning activities to improve their quality of life.
This is a bargaining unit position
Work Schedule: 8:30-5:00pm- tour of duty may be rotated/changed due to patient care needs.
