To provide the most complex clinical and laboratory prosthetic and orthotic services to disabled patients. Included in this series is such work as:
(1) Treatment of all amputation levels, spinal cord injury patients, and those with related disabilities requiring the use of orthotic, prosthetic, and footwear devices to take the place of, or assist a part, or function of the body which is lost or impaired.
(2) Servicing as an advisor to physicians, therapists and other medical professionals with regard to indications and contraindications of prosthetic and orthotic components, prescription criteria
(3) Authorizing the purchase, fabrication or repair of prosthetic devices; fabricates, fits, and adjusts preparatory prosthesis.
(4) Maintaining continuous liaison with manufacturers and dealers of prosthetic supplies, inspecting their facilities and services and participating in the award of prosthetic appliance contracts;
(5) Participating in investigative/research project studies by selecting patients as pilot wearers of newly developed prosthetic items, evaluating the usefulness of such items and compiling of data; and
(6) Giving technical and administrative advice and assistance on prosthetic problems to other facilities.
(7) Assisting in the prescription of all orthotic and prosthetic devices as a consultant for the Prosthetic & Orthopedic clinic, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Vascular, Rheumatology, Ambulatory Care, Surgical and General Medicine Services.
(8) Employee has full responsibility for the operation of the laboratory to include the flexibility of planning and scheduling of varied and changing work situations.
(9) Annotates patient's records with regard to services rendered of treatment provided to comply with Quality Management and JACHO Standards and guidelines.
This work requires a specialized knowledge of the medical and psychological problems directly related to the use of prosthetic devices; and a specialized knowledge and understanding of the fabrication and satisfactory fitting of prosthetic devices. An Orthotist Prosthetist at this level must have analytical ability, social awareness, tact and diplomacy, and good communication skills. He/She must be able to anticipate the need for action. He/she must also possess the ability to deal effectively with individuals and groups and to adjust to difficult or stressful situations.
