San Marcos Aquatic Resources Center (Center), located in San Marcos, Texas, is a refugium for Texas wild rice, Texas blind salamander, San Marcos salamander, fountain darter, Devils River Minnow, Barton Springs salamander, and Comal Springs riffle beetle. Culture and habitat-related research on these species forms the core of the mission of the Center. Based on Section 7 consultations and recovery efforts, the Center is required to bring in refugium populations when the Edwards Aquifer springs and observation wells reach predetermined levels. The Center provides the information developed through its research program for use in the development of the Edwards Aquifer Authority's Habitat Conservation Plan and the nascent Edwards Aquifer Recovery Implementation Program. The Center has also initiated and maintained an intensive control program in the upper San Marcos River to eliminate the water trumpet, an invasive that threatens to replace the Texas wild rice and other native aquatic plants in the river.
