Park Rangers (Interpretation) develop educational displays, curriculum, and staff various educational events around the region. They interact with a variety of age groups interpreting Center resources and presenting interpretive programs. Programs include orientation talks, interpretive programs, environmental education, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs. They develop and maintain interpretive materials and educational displays, and staff information desks. Duties for some of these positions may focus on guiding a variety of age groups on interactive, interpretive hikes that explore the natural and cultural history of an area.
Park Rangers (Interpretation) may also assist in the performance of day-to-day operations at a visitor center including providing information and instructions to the general public. They may provide information, conduct permit compliance, and safety inspections. They may respond to emergency situations. They may participate in evaluating visitor use patterns, preparing and maintaining recreation sites, and monitoring condition of sites and natural and cultural resources.
NOTE:
Newport, OR: These positions are at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA), a 100-acre headland on the Oregon Coast. Significant interpretive topics include lighthouse history, intertidal ecology, marine mammals, and seabirds.
These Park Rangers develop and present interpretive programs that meet professional interpretive standards and connect visitors cognitively, affectively, and physically with Yaquina Head’s cultural and natural heritage to facilitate stewardship of all national public lands.
They research, develop, and present formal interpretive programs including “first person” and “third person” costumed interpretive tours of historic Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and “ranger-led tours” of the coastal headland focusing on intertidal ecology, marine mammals, seabirds, and other topics relevant to Yaquina Head and the interests of the visitor.
They conduct walking tours of the park that include climbing a 114-step stairway within the lighthouse, and a 135-step stairway to access the Yaquina Head Marine Garden. These duties require walking on uneven and slippery algae-covered rocks within the tidepools to provide interpretive services and facilitate visitor compliance with site regulation and policies through education and interpretation.
The employee works holidays, weekends, and varied shifts with morning shifts beginning before dawn and evening shifts ending after sunset.
Other duties include staffing the information desk at the Yaquina Head Interpretive Center and collecting fees and issuing federal recreation passes as a designated collections officer.
Baker City, OR: Park Rangers at this location are working for the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. These Park Rangers are responsible for presenting living history demonstrations and interpretive programs, creating and staffing exhibitions and special events, and leading interpretive walks along the on-site hiking trail system.
Other duties include staffing the information desk at the center, collecting fees and issuing federal recreation passes as a designated collections officer.

GS-6 Park Ranger- explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; developing and conducting guided tour programs; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; monitoring special recreation permits; conducting potable water tests in compliance with appropriate state laws; or assisting with supervision of seasonal recreation technicians. -OR- Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation (i.e. related course work). -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-7 Park Ranger- one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include being a park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; and collecting fees. Specialized experience will include basic knowledge of the principles of interpretation, public speaking, and use of presentation media. -OR- Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation (i.e. related course work) or superior academic achievement. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
Related Course Work -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science related to the protection of public lands, social sciences, museum sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly relates to the duties performed by a Park Ranger.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
