Park Rangers support the Bureau's recreation program. These positions primarily focus on fee collection but may on occasion assist in the performance of day-to-day operations at a visitor center or a customer use area that provides facilities such as picnic areas, campgrounds, trails, and/or other specialized recreational opportunities. Fee collection may occur in either indoor or outdoor environments, but most often in small confined fee collection booths. Fee collection includes collecting recreation fees from visitors, handling funds and/or property, operating electronic fee collection equipment, reconciling cash and credit card transactions, operating an automated system for recreation registrations, completing opening and closing shift duties, and on occasion providing information and instructions to visitors. Other occasional duties may include explaining basic regulations concerning safety, fire prevention, permit requirements and recreation facilities and activities to visitors, and/or ensuring facilities and customer use areas are free of visible safety hazards and recreation sites are maintained.
NOTE:
Newport, OR: These positions are at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA), a 100-acre headland on the Oregon Coast. Significant resources include the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Yaquina Head Marine Garden intertidal area, marine mammals, and seabirds.
These Park Rangers primarily collect fees and issue federal recreation passes as a designated collections officer at the fee station located at the park entrance. They work holidays, weekends, and varied shifts with morning shifts beginning before dawn and evening shifts ending after sunset.
They may occasionally conduct some walking tours of the park that include climbing a 114-step stairway within the lighthouse, and a 135-step stairway to access the Yaquina Head Marine Garden. These duties require walking on uneven and slippery algae-covered rocks within the tidepools to provide interpretive services and facilitate visitor compliance with site regulation and policies through education and interpretation.
Baker City, OR: Park Rangers at this location are working for the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. These Park Rangers are primarily responsible for staffing an entrance station booth and collecting entrance fees. Secondary duties include working at an information desk answering questions and directing visitors. Occasionally these Park Rangers may present short interpretation programs.
Wenatchee, WA: These positions are responsible for providing visitor services, such as collecting fees and answering questions, as well as providing facility maintenance, at the Yakima River Canyon recreation site. These recreation facilities are approximately 90 miles south of Wenatchee.

GS-4 Park Ranger- 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized work experience. Examples of general experience may include working in any administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Examples of specialized experience may include working at a visitor center information desk answering visitor questions that are routine and repetitive pertaining to geographical location of campgrounds, picnic areas, boating areas and other recreational areas; serving as a lookout to detect and report fires, status of fires, and suspicious smoke; or answering visitor's questions at an entrance station and explaining regulations covering common park use situations, such as campground reservations and rules, collection of fees and selling of permits. -OR- Successful completion of two years of education above high school with at least 12 semester hours of related course work. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-5 Park Ranger- one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; conducting guided tour programs; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; or monitoring special recreation permits. -OR- Successful completion of four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of related course work. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-6 Park Ranger- explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; developing and conducting guided tour programs; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; monitoring special recreation permits; conducting potable water tests in compliance with appropriate state laws; or assisting with supervision of seasonal recreation technicians. -OR- Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation (i.e. related course work). -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
Related Course Work -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science related to the protection of public lands, social sciences, museum sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly relates to the duties performed by a Park Ranger.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
