The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, roads, signs, trails, grounds care, boundary fence , equipment and related utilities. Assists higher graded maintenance workers of tradesmen in the performance of their work. Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools. Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects. Performs minor plumbing repairs. Performs fence installation, repair and maintenance. Performs repair work on roads and signs. Performs ground care operations. Operates small power tools and various hand tools. Maintain tools and equipment according to instructions and performance of basic operator maintenance on park vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment and other power equipment. Will be required to lift and carry objects, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven and/or steep terrain. Operate vehicles up to one ton and skid steer loaders in transporting of personnel and materials to and from work locations. Operates vehicles up to 10 ton in the transportation of equipment and materials to various work sites around the park. Maintains daily records of work and hours in accordance to park policy and submits to FMSS team in a timely manner.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or material up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. If the incumbent of this position operates a motor vehicle (s) they must have a valid State Driver's License.

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota 75 miles east of Rapid City (population 57,000), and 30 miles from Wall, Kadoka, and Philip. Grocery shopping, a service station, several churches, K-8 school, and a post office are located in the friendly town of Interior (population 63), 2 miles from park headquarters. Shopping, medical and dental facilities, and schools K-12 are available in Wall, Kadoka, Philip, and Rapid City. The area is a beautiful place to live and raise a family!
There is plenty of hiking, biking and wildlife viewing available right on our doorstep. The night skies in Badlands National Park are famous and folks travel for long distances to view them. The area surrounding us presents lots of seasonal activities such as winter skiing and summer camping for a few.
We are surrounded by other National Parks and State Parks as well. Mount Rushmore National Monument, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Black Hills National Forest and Custer State Park, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as well the infamous Wall Drug are within hours of Badlands National Park.
