The purpose of the Child and Youth Program (CYP) Food Service Worker position is to assist in the daily preparation and serving of nutritionally balanced meals and snacks. Prepares sandwiches and heats vegetables, soups, etc. Prepares simple salads, fruits and desserts. Washes, slices, chops, dices, peels, or mashes fruits and vegetables. Follows recipes to measure and mix ingredients to prepare simple dishes. Assists in menu planning by providing information on inventory of food. Takes count of participants (children and youth) to prepare trays; portions prescribed amounts of foods into serving dishes; arranges meals and serving ware on trays and delivers to classrooms for serving. Wraps, arranges and/or packages items for serving to participants. Cleans cooking utensils, equipment, counters and immediate work area. Labels and dates all items in refrigerators and freezers, and stores leftovers in accordance with sanitation and health procedures for safe food handling.
Ensures that food items, supplies and equipment are properly cleaned, stored and maintained in accordance with Marine Corps directives and local standard operating procedures (SOP) s. Washes dishes, sweeps floors, and takes temperature readings on refrigerators and freezers. Scrubs, mops, waxes and polishes floors. Cleans walls and ceilings, sweeps and removes trash and other refuse. Assists in loading and unloading vehicles.
Monitors food service for the assigned area ensuring compliance with applicable policies to include the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Department of Defense (DoD) and Marine Corps food program policies and procedures which include serving proper meal components and portion sizes. Provides input for changes in menus based on child/youth and parent suggestions. Maintains food program records as required.
Serves as a member of the Installation CYP staff to ensure compliance with health, fire, safety, facility and program regulatory requirements and CYP baseline standards. Assists in maintaining DoD/MC certification for assigned program areas, and helps to ensure the program achieves and retains national accreditation or the Marine Corps equivalent. Recommends the procurement of supplies and equipment.
Required to observe particular health related practices to provide reasonable accommodation for participants with special needs when applicable.
Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
EVALUATIONS:
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Skill to perform tasks with several steps and use judgment in the performance of sequential tasks. Concentration is required to serve uniform individual portions and to avoid distractions, such as when several people ask for different items at the same time. Simple arithmetic and the ability to read instructions and present information are required. Working knowledge of common health and sanitation procedures to prevent contamination of food. Ability to lift and move heavy objects, and perform heavy cleaning safely. Ability to provide continual care and attention to avoid accidents and finish work properly.
RESPONSIBILITY: Independently completes steps or sequences of steps needed to complete assigned work. Follows specific oral or written instructions when changes or new assignments are made. Uses some judgment in deciding that the standards of sanitation, attractiveness, timeliness, safety, and service are met (i.e., serving and individual portioning). The supervisor periodically checks to see that work is done on time and according to instructions.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves moderate to heavy physical effort such as frequently lifting or moving objects and constant standing and walking. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work areas are often warm and noisy. May be exposed to minor cuts, bruises, scalds, and the possibility of slipping on wet floors. May be exposed to extreme temperatures of hot kitchens and walk-in refrigerators.
Satisfactorily complete all background checks in accordance with DoD and Marine Corps policy for employees who provide child care services. Must pass a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease. Must complete all DoD training requirements within the specified time including orientation, initial, and annual ongoing training requirements, and required certifications, if any. Must maintain current food handlers, CPR and First Aid certifications. May be required to obtain a government driver’s license. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
