Participates in development of plans and programs for range management by collecting data for grazing allotment plans and advising management as to logical division of allotments into units, what improvements are needed, and what management practices can be affected. Maps allotments, delineating vegetative types and capability for grazing use.
Through knowledge of allotments, prepares salting plans, selects location of salt grounds, and executes the plans on-the-ground.
With guidance of supervisor, develops plans for the installation of range and soil condition and trend transects including clipping cages. Installs permanent and pace transects and clipping cages.
Obtains required measurements, records information concerning forage density, production and types, vigor, rate of growth, and soil depth, compaction and erosion. Analyzes and evaluates condition and trend data using available guidelines and standards. Determines the upward, downward, or stability of trends of range and soil conditions.
Implements allotment management plans by going over them on-the-ground with permittees and following up for compliance. Checks livestock use and inspects grazing allotments for forage conditions, distribution, salting, forage production, and use and condition of range improvements.
Gathers management data including location of existing and proposed range improvements, location of poisonous and noxious plant encroachments, etc., to be utilized in individual allotment plans.
Schedules and performs periodic livestock counts. Checks for trespass by livestock and takes initial action when trespass occurs by securing and documenting evidence and submitting it to superior. As necessary, serves as witness in court on such cases.
Maintains permitted and actual use records in the range management plan and documents observations in the course of range inspections.
Cares for pack and saddle stock; i.e., secures farrier services, veterinarian needs, feeds, grooms, and maintains saddle and tack, etc.

Specialized Experience is defined as: Assessed technical support studies of field data in order to prepare drafts and reports of botany-related biological data and findings; Conducted surveys for sensitive plants in project areas that included on-the-ground reconnaissance and record examination; Monitored plant phenology and made collections of seed and vegetative materials; Collected rangeland management data from multiple sites using a variety of established methods, procedures, and techniques. Modified procedures to adjust to conditions found at work sites.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.
