The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agricultures chief scientific research agency and one of the worlds premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.
This position is a Research Microbiologist (Research Associate) in the Genetics, Breeding, and Animal Health Unit (GBAHU) at the Roman L. Hruska US. Meat Animal Research Center located in Clay Center, Nebraska. The incumbent will work on respiratory pathogens of cattle and be a member of an interdisciplinary research unit whose mission is to define the role of genetics in animal, pathogen, and microbial community interactions in domestic livestock production; and whose goal is to develop effective genetic strategies that improve meat quality, animal health and production efficiency.

The incumbent is responsible for conducting a research program that evaluates genomic determinants of M. haemolytica that influence or associate with the lungs of cattle with respiratory disease for the development of improved vaccines or diagnostics. Field collected M. haemolytica strains may be subjected to whole-genome sequencing along with extensive molecular-based phenotyping. Basic microbiological laboratory techniques and custom designed molecular assays will be used to test the expression, location, and biological role(s) of M. haemolytica genetic determinants.

This position requires a recent Ph.D in Microbiology or Biology, Chemistry or a related field of study such as Virology, Immunology, Biochemistry, etc. that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Strong skills with microbiology and molecular biological techniques are also required.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
