Uses UX best practices and advanced web design software to create high-quality, functional website designs for NSF internal and external audiences that optimize user experience, enhance content, meet business and technical requirements, are fully compliant with the accessibility requirements of 508/WCAG 2.0, and demonstrate excellent command of visual design principles and typography.
Develops navigation schemes and information architectures for NSF websites and web applications by developing detailed concept models, personas, sitemaps, user flows, wireframes and prototypes that translate stakeholder requirements into design decisions and strategies.
Uses UX best practices (including heuristic review, data analysis, user interviews, testing, etc.) to identify ways to improve the user experience on web and application interfaces for internal and external online systems across the Foundation.
Manages design and information dissemination projects for NSF's external and internal websites, leading teams from within the Section and from other NSF organizations to ensure full lifecycle management concepts and principles are incorporated into web projects.
Designs and creates web graphics, icons, stylesheets, and color schemes for use in website and web application projects, ensuring site-wide color, branding and typeface standards and consistency.
Converts approved designs to clean, scalable and compliant code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript using HTML authoring tools; understands code in the context of design and optimization for the web, and builds related templates.
Coordinates work with web developers to ensure all websites and applications, pages, and elements comply with NSF authoring, accessibility and security guidelines; advises other NSF staff on web page coding and design issues; and participates as needed in the quality assurance testing of web pages, websites and applications.
Keeps current with new developments in the areas of user experience and online design principles, typography, usability, accessibility, web standards and compliance, and new web design tools, techniques and emerging digital media.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
