·The incumbent performs a wide range of police duties to enforce the Federal and State Criminal Codes and VA Regulations. Primary responsibility of the position is to ensure compliance with and enforce a full range of Federal, State, local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they pertain to law enforcement work.
·Possesses arrest/apprehension authority and is required to carry an agency-approved firearm in the performance of duties. The incumbent provides physical protection of patients, visitors, and employees, and is responsible for the preservation of the peaceful environment necessary for the operation of medical treatment programs.
·Independently conducts vigorous and inquisitive random foot or vehicle patrols in all areas of the medical center grounds, parking lots, and grounds to prevent the opportunity for criminal activity.
·Provides directions/assistance to patients, volunteers, visitors, and employees as required. This may require the handling and lifting of bulky and heavy items, such as pulling a person to safety during a fire, automobile accident, or during a natural disaster.
·Recognizes appearances that deviate from standards of normalcy for this environment and evokes suspicion of contraband possession. Routinely stops and questions these individuals to substantiate, or eliminate, these suspicions. Confiscates contraband detected and takes proper follow-up action to include arrest of the individual when necessary.
·Fully investigates crimes, some of which extend beyond one duty shift. Interrogates suspects, takes statements from witnesses, collects, marks, identifies, and preserves evidence, making sure proper procedures are followed in order that chain of custody may be proven.
