The Nurse Practitioner responsibilities include working in the operating room, endoscopic vein harvest, managing new referrals, ordering needed test and making decisions based on those test results as to whether a given patient is a surgical candidate and whether to bring in the patient for initial consult. Other responsibilities include performing history and physical, getting clients to pre-op clearance and eventually to surgery. Once the patient has gone through surgery, he/she manages the post op care and eventual follow ups which usually include serial cat scans and visits. The Nurse Practitioner must closely monitor and evaluate studies presented at the initial consult and any other reports needed for surgery. Functions of Assigned Duties: Develops monitors and alters a comprehensive health care treatment program through:
1. Formulating a comprehensive data base which includes a physical and psychosocial health history, physical examination, and evaluation of laboratory diagnostic testing, as indicated.
2. Discriminating between normal and abnormal findings in planning treatment intervention therapies. Collaborates with the supervisory/attending physician regarding abnormal findings.
3. Initiating and adjusting selected medications with formulary approval for inpatient and outpatients.
4. Facilitating the ordering of diagnostic tests, i.e., lab work, x-rays, EKGs, consults, and similar studies; documenting in the medical record all procedures performed for which the Physician Assistant is responsible. Orders for inpatients will be reviewed and signed by the managing physician in a timely fashion (within 24 hours).
5. Instituting and adjusting plans of care, utilizing Nurse Practitioner skills and nursing processes.
6. Initiating emergency treatment when indicated until a physician arrives. American Heart Association guidelines (CPR) will be followed.
7. Documenting clinical findings and progress in the medical record.
8. Stressing educational and rehabilitative goals, and health education, emphasizing patient and family/significant other participation in planning, treatment, and goal formulation.
9. Initiating and monitoring health maintenance in conjunction with the patient, family/significant other and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
10. Providing and promoting psychological support, in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team members, to patients and their support network.
