The Propulsion Technical Fellow provides expertise in propulsion including all thrust producing engines, motors, and thrusters used in aerospace applications and associated propulsion systems. The Propulsion discipline includes, but is not limited to: (1) Liquid Engines - cover a wide range of thrust, from large boosters to attitude control systems; (2) Solid Motors - thrust ranges from high powered boosters to low thrust separation and deceleration motors; (3) Nuclear/Electric/Propulsion - cover a wide thrust range; (4) Air Breathing Engines, fan/turbo jet, ramjet, and scramjet engines; and (5) Attitude Control Thrusters.
Serves an Agency resource on fundamental engineering theory and operational experience in the discipline, frequently leading teams, and always providing the theoretical foundation for the task. Collaborates with other eminent researchers and engineers from academia and other research or operations centers on tasks and in conducting and sponsoring discipline advancing work. Communicates engineering findings through NASA publications, scientific and engineering journals, tutorial seminars and short courses as part of the NESC Academy and at universities in the US and abroad, and is an invited presenter at national and international meetings and conferences. In addition, fosters participation in engineering academies.
Serves as the senior technical expert in the propulsion discipline in support of the Office of the Chief Engineer and the NESC. Provides the technical leadership of the NESC technical resources in order to perform independent technical reviews and is a national/international expert in the discipline. Is responsible for establishing a Technical Discipline Team (TDT) that will consist of the Agency's best experts, augmented by industry, national laboratories, university and Department of Defense experts as required. While the incumbent reports full-time to the Director, NESC, the remaining TDT resources are matrixed through formal task agreements with each NASA Center, and/or contracted through support services contracts held by the NESC. These TDTs will be called into action depending on the skills required for a particular independent technical assessment. Provides stewardship for the propulsion discipline including holding conferences and workshops to enhance discipline awareness and maintain discipline technical capability.

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in the engineering discipline or closely related field to the position for which applying.
The initial appointment will be for 3 years, with the possibility of extending up to an additional 2 years. If selectee is currently a permanent NASA civil service employee he/she will receive a temporary promotion. Employee will then return to a position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held. If selectee is on a nonpermanent civil service appointment, a permanent civil service appointment in another Agency, or is not currently on a civil service appointment he/she will receive a term appointment NTE 3 years. This appointment may be made permanent without further competition.
