Serves as Spanish language teachers for the Extension Programs Division of the Directorate of Continuing Education located at Ft. Mead, MD Language Training Detachment. The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) offers foreign language instruction in more than two dozen languages on a schedule that extends throughout the year. Courses are taught six hours per day, five days a week, with the exception of federal holidays and training holidays.
Day-to-day responsibilities include preparation for instruction, collecting and adapting teaching materials, correcting homework, assessing student performance, and counseling students. Teaches customized maintenance and enhancement foreign language courses with the primary goal of improving learners' foreign language proficiency. Works in concert with other faculty and staff in a multi-agency organization. Embraces and exemplifies teamwork and professionalism. Analyzes program effectiveness and student performance. Develops new materials and adapts existing materials. Candidates must demonstrate a solid knowledge in theories, methods, and techniques in foreign language teaching, testing and curriculum development. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours and travel to other LTD locations where his/her particular language is taught.
Native language proficiency in all skills is required, in addition to strong English communicative skills. Familiarity with sound foreign language teaching methodology, knowledge of learner variables, experience with foreign language curriculum development and knowledge of the government Language Proficiency Scale are essential qualifying factors. Diagnostic Assessment (DA) certification is desirable; however, if the candidate is not currently certified, completion of DA training will be necessary. Must be familiar with or capable of learning the operation of Windows-based desktop computers, to include word processing, Power Point, working with the Internet, and simple database management. The candidate may be expected to teach a flexible schedule and participate in one or two language immersion programs overseas and/or be asked on occasion to travel on MTT missions. The candidate must be able to use Smart Board technology in the classroom and work in a team environment. Experience with foreign language curriculum development is desirable. Must be willing to learn and integrate technology to enhance language instructional programs
