Duties also include planning and constructing customized shipping and storage containers for a large variety of items, most of which are irregular in size and/or shape. Containers involve complex construction problems and bracing requirements for large and unbalanced equipment, sensitive electronic equipment, delicate instruments, and heavy items such as spare parts for maintenance of the agency owned and operated aircraft. Prepares containers with appropriate bracing for shipment of hazardous materials such as flammables, caustics, and corrosives.
Prepares and constructs a full range of containers, both standards and nonstandard, with complex blocking and bracing to ship or store assemblies for items such as aircraft wings, radar antennas and various types of engines.
Constructs small and specialized containers for delicate instruments and various other items. Construct, layout and repair a variety of specialized and custom wood and wood substitute containers. In some cases, plastic and related materials may be laid out and cut using woodworking tools and equipment.
Fabricates storage bins, racks and pallets used in assembly and storage of equipment and materials. Pack materials for shipment and or storage by using cushioning materials prior to crating. Responsible for observing safety rules, fire regulations and exercising care as to prevent bodily injury. Subject to callback when advised by management. Responsible for processing shipments using CDS Rate Shopper to determine carrier and rate, and ensuring correct marking and labeling of packages.
Physical Efforts: Uses power and manual tools and devices that typically involve continuous physical effort and extended periods of standing, bending and stooping while building or repairing containers and material shipping devices. Lift and carry items weighing up to 70 pounds unassisted and frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes.
Working Conditions: Work is in warehouse or other enclosed area that may be drafty, cold or hot. Occasionally required to work outside for short periods of time and subject to prevailing weather conditions. Subject to noise and dust from power saws, hammers, nailing machines and related equipment. Exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises and scrapes, splinters, muscle strains and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices including safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves and proper clothing are used to minimize hazards.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations.
