A Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens using manual or automated techniques and require a board exercise of independent judgment with minimal technical supervision. Serves as an independent technologist in Clinical Laboratory of the Path and Lab Service in a university affiliated Medical Center.

Work performed is in a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as bacteriology, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), coagulation, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), serology and urinalysis. Technologist monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and provide education. They rotate with other generalists on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas.
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures and performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures
· Participates in quality assurance programs, such as College of American Pathologist or other regulatory agencies to maintain accreditation, corrects deficiencies promptly and keep laboratory standards at a high level
· Prepares reagents, assembles equipment; performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance; performs and calculates results for a variety of complex tests such as sterile fluid exams, buffy coat smears, Gram Stains, special tests for hemolytic anemia, special coagulations studies for disseminated intravascular coagulation work-ups
· Performs a broad range of blood banking duties including obtaining blood and other components; screens blood for irregular antibodies; types and crossmatches patient/donor for transfusion; prepares platelet and type specific plasma
· Performs ABO and RH typing of specimens; resolving discrepancies
· Performs antibody screening; identifies any antibody detected by testing patient serum against appropriate panel of red cells
· Thaws fresh frozen plasma; prepares other components when ordered
· Investigates autoimmune hemolytic disease performing direct coombs test, using IgG, C3 poly specific reagents. When coombs test is positive, the sample is further evaluated
· Selects appropriate donor blood to be transfused; performs crossmatching of the patient's serum and the donor's red blood cells
· Performs transfusion reaction investigations
· Monitors and evaluates requests for blood/blood products ensuring request meet VA blood usage criteria
· Orders blood and blood products from Community Blood Center; returns blood products when appropriate
Work Schedule: Various Tours including day shifts, off-hour shifts and weekend/holiday rotation. The shift can be modified based on the need of the laboratory.
