The incumbent is the Chief Counsel of the United States Mint with responsibility for overseeing a legal team providing advice and counsel to the Director of the Mint, concerning the functions and activities of the Mint. The major programs and operations of the Mint include: (1) the manufacture of all coins of the United States, including circulating, bullion, and commemorative coins; (2) the distribution of all circulating coins to and among the Federal Reserve banks and branches; (3) the custody and processing of Treasury's stock of gold and silver; (4) the production, marketing and sale of numismatic items, including proof coin sets, uncirculated coin sets, and commemorative coin programs; and (5) the production of Congressional Gold Medals and the production and sale of other medals of a national character. The Director of the Mint has offices in Washington, D.C. and supervises and directs the operations of five field facilities located throughout the United States.

The Chief Counsel is the legal advisor to the Director of the Mint and United States Mint management on all matters that may arise in the bureau. Reporting to the General Counsel for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, through the Assistant General Counsel (General Law, Ethics and Regulation), the Chief Counsel performs the following duties and responsibilities:
