The Chief of the Urdu Service in the Voice of America's South and Central Asia Division has overall editorial and managerial responsibility for news and programming targeted to VOA's Urdu-speaking audience. The incumbent will report to the South and Central Asia Division Director and supervise writers, reporters, editors, producers and other digital, TV and radio staff.
The Urdu Service Chief must be a capable leader, experienced journalist and manager with a track record in building and growing audiences in broadcast or digital. The incumbent should have a vision for the kind of coverage, content and digital products that will attract new Urdu-speaking audiences.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
~Provides leadership and coordination to a large multimedia staff in Washington, DC and a network of reporters in Pakistan, assigning them work as news events dictate. Offers guidance in maintaining high-quality and competitiveness of Urdu to Pakistan programs. Hires talent, appraises staff performance, ensures participation in workplace engagement activities and advises/updates team members on VOA journalistic goals and requirements.
~Possesses strong interpersonal skills and takes a proactive approach in providing leadership, motivation and team building.
~Oversees, coordinates and directs the day-to-day operation of the Urdu TV, radio and web programs.
~Conceives, plans, researches, writes and edits highly-targeted original TV, radio and web reports. Oversees content on Internet, TV, radio and social media platforms. Understands media trends and the psychology and values of the audience and implements new media strategies.
~Exercises editorial responsibility for content of all media products to ensure content is clearly and accurately written and information is presented in a logical flow.
~Coordinates a variety of policy and management issues. Regularly updates processes and procedures to keep the service in line with emerging media trends. Establishes structures and procedures to ensure consistency with quality of operations.
~Recommends changes to existing division policies and procedures; hears and resolves employee complaints; effects minor disciplinary actions in the workplace and identifies needs for training for personnel within the service.
