This vacancy announcement will be a continuous vacancy announcement and will be used to fill full-time and intermittent Advanced Medical Support Assistant vacancies as they open. These positions are located within the Chillicothe VA Medical Center or one of its six Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) in Athens, Cambridge, Lancaster, Marietta, Portsmouth and Wilmington, Ohio. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) will provide exceptional customer service to include answering phone calls, scheduling, and providing face to face customer service. The Advanced MSA will perform administrative support duties in Clinic settings or Telephone Call Centers. The Advanced MSA will coordinate with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports (e.g., Clinic Utilization Statistical Summary), and ensure the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic. The incumbent will develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies (e.g., assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge; communicate with non-VA medical facilities; facilitate/process secure messaging with the patient and team; notify patients of normal lab results, etc.) The incumbent will participate in team huddles and team meetings to assist with the manage and plan of the patient care while assisting with setting priorities and deadlines. The incumbent will manage the electronic wait list to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues; participate and provide input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings, perform administrative follow up actions; participate in and independently following up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, primarily day shift - 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but schedule will be discussed during interview. Weekends and evenings may apply. Traveling may be required to Chillicothe VA Medical Center and other CBOC locations.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, push, pull and carry items such as a lap top. The work requires long periods of utilizing a computer keyboard and up to two monitors, completing phones calls and charting. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 lbs. Patient mental status and physical habits will require the incumbent to be able to assist patients during transfer that is required of examinations. Specific vision abilities required by this job function include but are not limited are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Basic Requirements:
Education: One year above high school;
or
Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position;
GS-6 Grade Requirement: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency: An AMSA must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j. (To be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., Chapter 73 or 74, serving in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA, applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.)Time in grade restrictions apply. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must have served at least at the GS-05 grade level or higher to meet time-in-grade requirements.
This position requires an active Basic Life Saving(BLS) skills certification to include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). If applicant does not have an active BLS certification, applicant is allowed thirty (30) days to obtain such certification. If BLS certification is not obtained within the thirty (30) days allowed, applicant will be terminated.
The full performance level of this vacancy is a GS-6.
