This is a Term appointment Not to Exceed 5 years and the activity has the option of extending the appointment up to a Maximum of 6 Years. Employees hired under the modified TERM appointment authority may be eligible for conversion to career-conditional appointments. To be converted, the employee must (1) have been selected for the term position under competitive procedures, with the announcement specifically stating that the individual(s) selected for the term position (s) may be eligible for conversion to career-conditional appointment at a later date; (2) must have served 2 years of substantially continuous service in the term position, (3) be selected under merit promotion procedures for the permanent position, and (4) have a current rating of "B" or better.
This position is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) which is in Harford County, Maryland, along the Northern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. APG sits on more than 72,500 acres and offers recreation, sports, golf, pools, and child/day care facilities.
The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is participating in an alternative personnel system known as the Laboratory Personnel Demonstration Project (DEMO). Among other features, the demonstration project replaced GS grade levels with occupational families and pay bands. The pay band DB-02 represents the former GS-5 step 01 through GS-11 step 10.

Candidate will perform research in areas dealing with predictive capabilities via High Performance Computing (HPC) in simulation sciences. Duties will involve both individual but predominately team-focused research, and will require multi-disciplinary knowledge and/or experience in one or more disciplines in computer science, applied mathematics, and physical sciences with preferred knowledge in uncertainty quantification techniques. Execution of these tasks may also require giving presentations and writing technical reports.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic Qualification for General Engineer (0801):
Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the program must:
(1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by
the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and
courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the
following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics;
(b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics,
hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature
and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to
properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering
science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or
electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- college-level education,
training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge
of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering,
and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the
engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the
branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated
by one of the following:
1. Professional registration -- Current registration as an Engineering Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
2. Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
3. Specified academic courses -- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.
4. Related curriculum -- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a
bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics,
hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering,
provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering
experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
Basic Qualifications for Physicist (1310):
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Qualification for Computer Scientist (1550):
Degree: Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of Computational Science & Engineering.
2. Skill in High Performance Computing (HPC).
3. Ability to Work as a Research Team Member.
4. Ability to Communicate Orally and in Writing.
