WHAT DOES A LEAD APPEALS TAX SPECIALIST DO? As a Lead Tax Specialist, serves as a team leader in the Penalty Appeals Operating Unit. This position has the responsibility for administratively resolving tax issues that are generated and referred to Appeals by various service center compliance and accounts management components. Serves as a Subject Matter Expert leading team discussions on technical penalty appeal questions and as an On the Job Instructor. Assists the Appeals Team Manager by conducting Taxpayer and Power of Attorney call backs and acts as Appeals Team Manager as needed. In this capacity, he/she performs work that is of the same kind and level as the highest level of work accomplished by the team members led.
WHAT IS THE APPEALS DIVISION? Independent by statute and staffed by highly trained professionals, the Appeals function provides alternative dispute resolution for any taxpayer contesting IRS compliance actions. Appeals represents the last opportunity for the IRS and a taxpayer to resolve disputes prior to litigation, and ensures that all taxpayers can receive an impartial review of their tax case. This impartial review is essential to the integrity of the American tax system.

As a Lead Appeals Tax Specialist you will:
** Applicants above the GS-9 level must demonstrate their knowledge of Principles of Accounting and Intermediate Accounting. Candidates can demonstrate this knowledge either through successful completion of 12 semester hours/18 quarter hours of college level accounting (with at least 6 semester / 9 quarter hours at the intermediate level) or successfully passing an IRS Online Intermediate Accounting Assessment.**
A copy of your official or unofficial college transcripts must be uploaded with your resume or you will receive an invite to take the online accounting assessment. You must pass this assessment in order to meet the accounting requirement for this position.
