The Office of Audits conducts and coordinates audits and program evaluations of the management and financial operations of DHS. The OA oversees the annual program and financial audits of various DHS programs and operations. Audits (evaluation and review) typically involve complex, novel, or highly controversial issues and cover varied topics concerning the programs, functions, and/or operations of DHS, and are conducted to evaluate the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of program and functional operations; to determine compliance with applicable laws and regulations; to evaluate internal controls; and to identify any abuse or illegal acts.
The Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Audits manages a multidisciplinary a staff of Auditors, Program Analyst and Communications Analyst. The executive participates fully with the Assistant Inspector General for Audits in the development and direction of audit activities and programs. These audit activities and programs are designed to effectively respond to the interests and needs of the Inspector General in carrying out the mission and functions of the Office of Inspector General.

As a Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Audits (DAIGA), the executive directs and is responsible for operational and functional development, implementation and supervision of DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) audit activities. Participates with the Assistant Inspector General of Audits (AIGA) in the formulation of audit program policies, procedures, goals, and objectives and the development of long and short-range strategic plans for OIG audit programs and activities. Participates in the formulation of budget requirements to accomplish program goals and activities. Manages all auditing activities in assigned areas through subordinate office and division managers and supervisors. Leads, directs, supervises and oversees the overall planning, direction, performance and timely execution of audit activities. Supervises day-to-day operations of the Office of Audits (OA), in assigned areas, including Headquarters and the Field Offices. Determines resource needs and is accountable for allocation of such resources. Gives approval on hiring selections and promotions recommended by subordinate supervisors. Assures that subordinate supervisors are effectively managing their programs and are providing proper supervision to their personnel assigned. Coordinates auditor training requirements.
Serves as advisor to the AIGA in the development, planning, and implementation of the agency's and the OAs goals and objectives in carrying out assigned functions. The DAIGA is required to analyze and evaluate the agency's audit activities, Oversees the preparation of and reviews written reports sent to senior management officials for comment and action, and make decisions and recommendations to improve efficiency of audit activities. Prepares a portion of the Semiannual Inspector General report to Congress, which deals with audit matters. Serves as the OIG's representative in interagency matters regarding audit initiatives and activities. Participates in joint audit/investigative activities.
In performing these duties, the DAIG must have a thorough knowledge of the principles, theories and techniques used in the analytical and evaluative work as well as auditing practices and policies. In addition, the DAIG should have an in-depth knowledge of the Inspector General function and related policies, procedures, and programs.
