As Supervisory Research Astrophysicist, specializing in Fields & Particles, you will participate jointly with the Lab Chief in managing all aspects of Lab operations including research and mission planning, supervision of staff, IT security, budget and workforce planning, and, in his/her absence, may act with full authority in the management of the Lab. You will work with the Lab Chief of the Astrochemistry Laboratory in maintaining a coherent research program in accordance with NASA programmatic goals and carries out the organizational management of the Laboratory. Special emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of, and serving as an advocate for, the scientific content of the various projects and research activities being conducted within the Laboratory in support of NASA's Planetary Science Division, GSFC’s Sciences and Exploration Directorate and Solar System Exploration Division. You will maintain cognizance of the scientific thrusts within other Laboratories in GSFC’s Solar System Exploration Division, and at other related NASA Field Centers.
You will manage the work of employees within the laboratory who conduct remote sensing, in situ, and direct sample-return measurements, as well as observations, modeling studies, and laboratory experiments to better understand chemical processes in astrophysical and planetary environments. Laboratory personnel also develop X-ray, gamma ray, and neutron instrumentation for planetary missions. And, carry out measurements, observations and modeling of key rates and/or fundamental quantities that control important chemical processes in astrophysical and planetary environments or that yield the chemical and isotopic compositions of solar system bodies. Laboratory personnel also perform simulations of natural processes or synthesize simplified analog samples of natural materials in order to better understand the unexpected consequence of natural events or to record the spectroscopic properties of well characterized samples for comparison with observations.
You will perform research which includes, but is not limited to, empirical and theoretical investigations in the chemistry and physics of molecular species in extraterrestrial targets (cometary, icy satellite, planetary atmospheres or surfaces, interstellar molecules and ices, and/or exoplanet atmospheres); radiation chemistry and photochemistry applied to astrochemical problems; and molecular spectroscopy, especially as applied to free radical structure and reactions. These studies are applied to the interpretation of spectra obtained by space- and ground-based spectroscopy and to understanding the astrobiological or astrochemical implications of these observations.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
