The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician in the Core Laboratory Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program. The incumbent is responsible for performing multiple duties in the central accessioning, specimen processing area and clinical laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for performing a patient testing which includes but is not limited to urine pregnancy testing (Biochemistry), Strep A (Streptococcus Aureus) and Influenza A/B (virus), utilizing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in Microbiology, Vaginosis, (determining Candida species, Gardnerella vagina/is and Trichomonas vagina/is nucleic acid in vaginal fluid specimens), Fecal Occult Blood, (Immunoassay testing utilizing polyclonal anti-human hemoglobin antibodies), maintaining inventory and completing weekly and monthly maintenance in Blood Banking. The individual is required to prepare the specimen or patient for testing, prepare reagents (when required), perform test procedure, verify the accuracy of the results and report the valid test results in the Laboratory computer system. The above advanced testing methods include Polymerase Chain Reaction and Immunoassay, that require strict specimen preparation, etc., treating samples with a lysing solution.
Standard Operating Procedures and Manufacturer's instructions will be strictly followed during all test procedures. Incumbent is responsible for ensuring all Quality Control and Calibration material are not outdated before using. The incumbent will verify acceptable control lots by performing correlation studies when new lot numbers are received. The incumbent is responsible to verify valid results to include the reportable range for quantitative tests. Incumbent is responsible to ensure the temperature and relative humidity is in acceptable range before and during testing.
The incumbent is responsible for Microbiology set-ups to include plating and accessing of microbiology samples from the floor and from the CBOC. Will follow all established protocol from the department.
The incumbent performs established quality control procedures to check the accuracy and validity of the test results. Any deviations in quality control results are documented and reported to the supervisor. Prior to reporting patient test results, the incumbent acts to correct the quality control deviations. He/she identifies instrument malfunctions, if applicable, and takes appropriate action to correct them.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday with rotating Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
