The Echocardiography Technician will identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions using ultrasound imaging and simultaneous doppler techniques. The MIT incorporates the causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. They change and develop sounding techniques to accommodate such variables as limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or dimension of the patient, presence of prosthesis or foreign objects, and ultrasonic response of different body parts. He/she produces diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display and color flow Doppler imaging. The Echocardiography Technician is well versed in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, Duties include but not Limited to:

Based on knowledge of cardiac disorders and associated symptoms, the echocardiography technician performs complex procedures.
Cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart and valves using sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valve chamber enlargement and pericardial effusion,
Thrombus and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc.
The MIT alters imaging techniques to accommodate such variables as limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or size of the patient, and ultrasound characteristics of different tissue densities.
The technique is extremely operator dependent and the examination process is complex.
Receives patients, explains procedures and performs exam.
The MIT performs ECG and more complex procedures such as signal average ECG, tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, Holter monitoring, event monitoring, stress tests, stress thalliums and pacemaker checks.
The MIT will also perform additional tests as directed by the Chief, Cardiology Section.
The Medical Instrument Technician is a technical expert in the operation, calibration and maintenance of the specialized equipment in the Cardio lab.
He/she is responsible for training Cardiology fellows in performing and interpreting echo exams.
They participate in the instruction of echocardiography technicians, students, nursing staff as needed and other health care professions.
