Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages based on plan of care and the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient.
2. Documents observations, assessment, and changes in patient's condition. Able to work in any area in the emergency department or designated location assigned, i.e. triage, fast track and critical care.
3. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes.
4. Provides a full range of nursing care to patients of all ages with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
5. Completes work in a timely manner and demonstrating the ability to assume leadership in a patient centered care environment.
6. Demonstrates effective communication skills with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.
7. Adheres to established policies, directives, nursing board and emergency department standards of care, and standards of practice.
8. Advocates for continuity and coordination of patient care both within and outside of the hospital, including all members of the interdisciplinary team.
9. Ensures that patients receive thorough education and instructions related to care and treatment performed during their emergency department visit.
10. Administers a variety of treatment modalities, including oxygen, immunizations, IV fluid, blood transfusions and prescribed oral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications. Sets up, operates and monitors specialized equipment.
11. Implements nursing protocols within their scope of practice.
12. Able to direct the care of Intermediate Care Technicians, Nursing Assistants, and other nursing staff in the emergency department.
13. Ensures appropriate patient education occurs.
14. Able to prioritize patient care using the AHRQ Emergency Severity Index (ESI) Scoring system
15. Ability to use computer systems, for documentation and data collection. Knowledge of Computer Patient Record Systems (CPRS).
16. Plans, coordinates and utilizes available staff to accomplish patient care workload based on staff's skills and abilities.
17. Responds appropriately to emergency situations and functions as a member of the hospital Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue, Code White and Code Gray emergency response teams.
