This position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in the Mental Health Care Line. The Psychologist will be clinically and administratively supervised by the Behavioral Health Program Director, but will be assigned to the Oncology Service of the Medical Care Line.
Integrating care for mental and physical health conditions will be the focus of treatment for veterans presenting to the Oncology Service. The Psychologist will apply knowledge of behavioral medicine and psychotherapeutic techniques in the assessment and treatment of patients with the goal of assisting patients to partner with the multidisciplinary team in working to diminish, eliminate, or better cope with chronic medical conditions, as well as stabilization of common psychological conditions. The Psychologist uses evidence based psychotherapies, relaxation techniques, stress management, and/or other discipline appropriate techniques. The Psychologist may also offer educational services to the family and caregivers of patients with whom they work to facilitate and generalize treatment gains.
The Psychologist assists with the development and implementation of MEDVAMC integrated care programs in oncology, including effective screening of psychosocial distress in cancer patients. In collaboration with other related specialists at the Houston Cancer Center and nine area Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's), the Psychologist will develop tele-mental health integrated behavioral health programming for rural veterans with cancer. The Psychologist will develop and implement procedures to measure patient satisfaction and will track and trend data related to integrated mental health service delivery and patient outcomes, including but limited to the efficacy of prescribed treatment modalities.
Consistent with the MEDVAMC mission as an Academic VA, the Psychologist also serves as a supervisor for psychology trainees at all levels and when appropriate as a mentor/supervisor for trainees/staff in other closely related health care disciplines.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm (you may be required to work evenings or weekends)
