This position is assigned to the Rehabilitation Care Service Line, American Lake Division, Tacoma, WA and Seattle Division, Seattle, WA. The Outpatient Pelvic Floor Clinical Specialist Physical Therapist is responsible for completing complex evaluation and treatments applying advanced evaluation methodologies and treatment theories in the provision of care to a vast array of functional impairments as well as provide clinical practice guidance for other staff Physical Therapists. Provides expertise and training to the Physical Therapy staff regarding patients with complex orthopedic rehabilitation needs. The pelvic floor knowledge has been acquired through a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in this area, 1000 clinical hours, or a Board Certification in this specialty area, completion of a clinical residency or fellowship program, or by obtaining an advanced degree in a related field.
The incumbent provides expertise and training to the Physical Therapy staff regarding patients with complex neurological or orthopedic rehabilitation needs, and is able to apply this expertise to the geriatric population. The incumbent's goals of treatment are to evaluate physical functioning; recommend appropriate placement or discharge plans; restore and enhance performance and potential for independent living; maximize function within the patient's lifestyle; and aid in the adjustment and understanding of disability. The incumbent is involved with the care of Veterans and authorized non-veterans ages 17 and older. The incumbent will also provide the described evaluation and treatment elements for the outpatient Veteran population as well.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Uses advanced skills and knowledge of physical therapy theories and techniques to evaluate patients as appropriate for their age and diagnosis to determine current levels of functioning (range of motion, strength, balance, coordination, sensation, mobility, endurance, posture, and other musculoskeletal and neurologic assessments).
- Establishes goals and eventual discharge plans.
- Develops and carries out physical therapy treatment to meet the individual rehabilitation objectives which may include: neuromuscular facilitation, electrical stimulation, modalities, mobilization, traction, strength/ endurance training, aquatic therapy techniques, functional mobility skills, wheelchair skills, patient/family education.
- Serves as subject matter expert in the area of pelvic floor rehabilitation for the Physical Therapy Department at either campus.
- Provides expertise to other therapists in the department and other disciplines throughout the facility.
- Assesses the need for and the patient's ability to use adaptive equipment including ambulatory assistive devices, manual wheelchairs, scooters, and TENS units. Measures, fits, and instructs patients in. the use of complex adaptive and assistive devices. Evaluates the patient's needs with respect to prescribed braces and orthotics. Selects appropriate appliances, and/or recommends any necessary modifications to provide for proper fit.
- Continuously re-evaluates patient performance making appropriate modifications to the treatment plan as indicated. Regularly presents patient information to the physician and other team members regarding patient physical and psychosocial performance, current status and continuing goals in interdisciplinary meetings.
- Requires an understanding of the problems of patients with multiple interacting medical and psychosocial issues allowing for thorough care.
- Handles and defuses volatile behavior as needed.
- Practices infection control.
- Serves as a resource to other staff with more complex patients.
- Serves as a professional role model to other PT staff by providing efficient and quality patient care.
- Expands development of telehealth with pelvic floor rehabilitation to better target and treat Veterans living remotely with improved access to Veterans and decrease travel' cost to VA.
