This position is located in the Office of General Counsel (OGC), Department of Homeland Security. This position serves as the Associate General Counsel for the Legal Counsel Division within OGC. The General Counsel, who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, is the Department's chief legal advisor and principal legal advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security and, as such, has final authority and responsibility for legal policy determinations within the Department and its components.

The Associate General Counsel for Legal Counsel assists the General Counsel in functioning as the chief legal advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security and other senior leadership of the Department. The Associate General Counsel for Legal Counsel assists the General Counsel in preparing legal opinions and providing oral advice in response to requests from the Secretary and others in the Department. Such requests typically deal with legal issues of particular complexity and significance or about which there may be conflicting authority.
The incumbent provides legal advice with respect to constitutional questions as well as other significant issues presented in appellate or other litigation affecting Departmental equities.
The incumbent performs a variety of special assignments referred by the General Counsel.
Works with a wide variety of offices, inside and outside DHS, to ensure that all affected parties have input into the legal development and implementation processes.
Directs the provision of a full range of legal advice and services in the development of the legal counsel program. Ensures that legal counsel matters are consistent with the intent of the law and are technically and administratively sound, efficient, and economical in nature.
Participates with the General Counsel in making recommendations on overall office programs as they are affected by legal counsel program development. Represents the General Counsel with senior DHS management, other Federal agencies, business representatives and others in interpreting OGC programs and/or issues related to legal counsel.

A Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited institution is required for this position.
You must possess a law degree from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia, and must not be under any order of any court suspending, enjoining, retraining, disbarring, or otherwise restricting you in the practice of law.
