The Dental Hygienist serves in the Surgical Services Service Line of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The position provides direct patient care under the general supervision of the Dentist and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently such as, but not limited to:
· Providing customer service with patient questions and resolution;
· Scheduling appointments for patients;
· Managing patient's follow-up appointments;
· Setting up planned procedures and post clean-up for timely turn-over;
· Providing routine oral prophylactic care to include application of fluoride solutions;
· Providing gross debridement, deep scaling, curettage, and root planning procedures;
· Cleaning fixed and removable dental prostheses;
· Applying desensitizing and sealant materials;
· Making impressions for fluoride carrier trays;
· Administering topical and local anesthetic agents;
· Following procedures within standard infection control protocols;
· Providing patients educational care post procedure;
· Dental imaging;
· Preparing instruments post procedure for sterilization per SPD standards;
· Patient chart diagnostic planning and treatment implementation;
· Maintaining patient confidentiality per HIPAA standards;
· Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
Hygienists must be able to work seated for several hours at a time to provide clinical services to patients. Stoop to assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, Reach to manipulate standard or portable equipment [dental x-ray units], Stand while observing demonstrations, Walk to transport instruments and supplies, and assist patients into the clinic. Walk to other areas of the VA as needed, Feel to perceive attributes of patients and objects such as when performing intra-oral and extra-oral examinations; to use assessment instruments, such as explorers and probes; to detect hard deposits on teeth; to evaluate deposit removal; to use restorative instruments.Occasionally Dental Hygienists must be able to: Crouch to operate equipment and stock supplies, Perform repetitive motions to enter computer data and to manually debride teeth, Grasp to hold instruments, Pull to move equipment or supplies that can weigh as much as 50 pounds. Frequently Dental Hygienists must be able to: Push to move portable equipment with 20 pounds of force to in the clinic, Pull to move portable equipment with 20 pounds of force to in the clinic, Lift to move boxes of supplies in the dental clinic, Use Fingers To enter computer data and use dental instruments, Carry to carry supplies that can weigh as much as 25 pounds.
