These are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Shenandoah National Park is April-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The positions may be filled at the GS-05, GS-06, or GS-07 levels. Pay for GS-05 is $16.00 PH; pay for GS-06 is $17.84 PH; pay for GS-07 is $19.82 PH.
POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

- The purpose of this position is to perform human-wildlife conflict management in Shenandoah National Park. Selectee performs as a lead field assistant to park biologists to implement a human-wildlife conflict management and aversive conditioning program (primarily black bear). Major duties include assessing nuisance black bear and white-tailed deer behavior in developed areas. Performs aversive conditioning on habituated black bear and white-tailed deer throughout the park's developed areas. Aversive conditioning includes the ability to safely handle and operate a shotgun armed with rubber projectiles or beanbag rounds for the purposes of hazing nuisance black bears. Other aversive conditioning tools that the selectee will be using include paintball guns, air horns, and projectile noise-makers. The incumbent will conduct black bear culvert-trapping, conduct relocations, and assist with the free-range capture work of food-conditioned black bears. In campgrounds and picnic areas, the selectee will deal with visitor trash management problems, assist with food/cooler impounds or securement, issue food storage warnings, provide public education to visitors, assist with wildlife approach distance infractions, and assist with wildlife feeding problems. Incumbent will work closely with law enforcement and campground staff in conducting the aforementioned duties.
- Additional duties include conducting surveillance for chronic wasting disease (CWD) symptomatic deer, and conducting opportunistic CWD sampling of road-killed deer throughout the park. Selectee maintains wildlife management equipment and performs data entry into customized computer databases. Uses standardized software for preliminary wildlife data analysis and summary. Incumbent reports resource-related violations to law enforcement staff. Other duties may include assisting with wildlife monitoring, integrated pest management, forest pest management, and peregrine falcon restoration work.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level of this announcement.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions including high heat and humidity, cold, wind, and rain and terrain; and exposure to pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, ticks (including ticks that carry Lyme Disease), and wild animals.The positions involve some long distance hiking, up to 5 miles a day in steep, mountainous terrain in all types of weather. Must be capable of lifting, carrying and packing objects and loads of 40-50 pounds; also requires the ability to load a bear culvert trap into the back of a pickup truck. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
