Position is located in the Surgical Service, under the supervision of the Chief of Surgery, Surgical Service Line at the Hampton VA Medical Center. The candidate will participate in our clinical and surgical practice and teaching programs as affiliate with Eastern Virginia Medical School Surgical Residency Program.
Orthopedic Staff Surgeon, incumbent is accountable to the Chief, Surgical Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Orthopedic Surgery Section while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.
Participates in and/or manages all aspects of a general orthopedic surgery program, to include inpatient and outpatient clinical, administrative, academic, and research components if warranted.
Manages patient care workload within available staffing, which may include fee basis physicians, active duty military orthopedic surgeons, consultant physicians, contracted physicians, physician assistants, and may include surgical residents.
Works effectively with Surgical Service administrative staff, Anesthesiology Section, Operating Room/Recovery Room Team, and the Surgical Clinic team which consists of Podiatry Section and Health Administration staff.
Coordinates care with VA-DoD sharing partners, and with VA's tertiary care facilities. The Orthopedic physician performs the administrative components of patient care management, such as: provides dictation of progress notes, OP reports, discharge summaries, signatures, and consultation referrals for inpatients and outpatients, etc.
Provides surgical treatment for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and diseases, including adult major joint reconstructive services.
Supervises and trains physician assistants, and surgical residents if available.
Must possess computer skills to access and input typed data on each patient into the computerized patient record system (CPRS).
Performs other directly related duties as required.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Must be familiar with hospital emergency plans, including fire safety, disaster plans, incident reporting, etc.Participates in fire and emergency preparedness drills as appropriate.
