This position provides for development and training under the Pathways Internship Program. Intern assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training.
As an intern, you will be assigned to a senior specialist or group of specialists. You will be assigned tasks designed to familiarize you with different aspects of the occupation. Tasks will vary depending on the senior specialist's current workload, but may include the following:
Assignments are from an engineer, construction representative, or higher-grade employee, who usually outlines the results desired and procedures to follow for tasks outside the experience of the incumbent. As a student-trainee, the incumbent is expected to perform a variety of uncomplicated tasks within this specialty without detailed instructions as to methods and procedures. Complicated features of assigned tasks are explained in detail, and incumbent is expected to ask questions where difficulties are encountered. Work is spot checked occasionally for progress and upon completion for accuracy, adequacy, and with instructions.
At the full-performance level, you will be responsible for the preparation of engineering studies, analysis, preliminary and/or final designs including project specifications of major civil and military projects either alone or with the assistance of lower grade personnel. You will adapt existing structures for multipurpose and specialized uses, frequently for which the original design was not intended containing combinations of unusual features. You will accomplishe engineering design for assigned projects, determine the required capacities, load and pressure requirements, and safety factors to meet all functions requirements of mechanical equipment, and make the original design or selection of standard designs or commercially produced equipment suitable for the installation concerned.
Other Requirements:
For this internship, the ideal candidate is enrolled as a student in a baccalaureate program and has declared a major in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering. The ideal candidate will have excellent grades with a GPA at a 3.0 or higher. The ideal candidate will have excellent grades and have some work experience (either paid or non-paid) in the area of Professional Engineering.
This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry and applicants must show evidence that their planned academic program will meet those requirements (i.e. transcript reflecting enrollment in applicable programs). Students who graduate without meeting those requirements may not be converted to the target position and could be separated from federal service.
Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
