The Sterile Processing Service (SPS) QI Coordinator reports to, communicates and collaborates with SPS Chief in the Quality Improvement and Safety surveillance of SPS and GI and clinics / OR processes at Mather, Martinez and Redding, wherever Semi Critical and Critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) is reprocessed or used. Provides quality oversight, produces reports, tracks non-conforming products and services using the VHA Directives and Memorandums, VHA Directive 1116(2), adheres to VA NCHCS policies, AORN, AAMI and IAHCSMM Standards using ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System guidelines. Member of the SPS management team assisting with development, implementation, coordination, maintenance and evaluation of all activities associated with semi critical and critical RME. This individual ensures that all areas of the Medical Center that use Semi- Critical and Critical RME are in compliance with VHA and local guidelines for safe use of RME. This includes ensuring that standard operating procedures (SOPs) and associated staff competencies for the reprocessing of Semi Critical and Critical RME used anywhere in the Medical Center are up to date and in concurrence with NCHCS and VISN21 SOPs and competencies. The QI Coordinator collaborates with the Chief, Assistant Chief SPS and SPS RN Educator to ensure the development, validation, and tracking of initial and annual competencies for all staff performing reprocessing of RME. The QI Coordinator serves as the Co-Chair of the RME Committee and, in collaboration with the Committee, develops and monitors a calendar for routine RME inspections of all areas where reprocessing occurs to ensure ongoing oversight. The incumbent demonstrates leadership and expertise in formulating creative and effective approaches to the management of a complex program and demonstrates the ability to interact with a wide variety of employees and work independently in accomplishing program goals and objectives.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 40 hrs per 2 week period with various days and 8hr shifts between 0700-1730

1.The SPS QI RN analyzes key steps in SPS and GI processes to identify potential for significant quality process improvement. This individual is responsible for Quality Improvement which may include developing educational training that covers all areas of SPS in accordance with VA Level One and VA Level Two training.
2. Monitoring and surveillance of processes and document and records within all SPS areas and anywhere Reusable Medical Equipment utilization would occur.
3. Assesses correct pre-cleaning, aseptic and sterilization processes and techniques, operation of sterilizers, principles of packaging sterile material, storage, correct sterilization and decontamination methods, safety, body mechanics, material handling and quality assurance monitoring techniques.
4.Exhibits leadership in promoting proactive and evidence-based care by bringing up to date research and data to the team and leading process improvements to keep team practices current.
5.Participates in management meetings and staff meetings in accordance with the ISO 9001:2008 Quality management System Preventive Actions, Corrective Actions and auditing process and procedures.
6.Applies a collaborative team approach in identifying, analyzing, and resolving SPS quality concerns, doing inspections and tracers throughout the VANCHCS sites where RME is utilized.
7.Exhibits leadership in promoting proactive and evidence-based care by bringing research and data to the team and leading process improvements to keep team practices current.
8.Promotes team interactions, and problem solving by actively participating in interdisciplinary committees and meetings to facilitate coordination and the achievement of identified goals.
9.Retains current knowledge of multidisciplinary SPS resources, programs, and services. Demonstrates ability to collaborate and coordinate with all levels of services and disciplines.
10.Actively participates in reviewing and updating policies, procedures, and standards to promote evidence-based, patient focused care.
11.Maintains professional knowledge and skills based on current evidence-based practice. Maintains expertise in quality processes as related to SPS/GI and RME.
12.Maintains effective working relationships with professionals and support personnel within the medical center and the community.Applies critical thinking and analytical skills to identify barriers for safe patient care delivery and utilizes processes improvement strategies to correct or improve current state.
