Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is located in West Branch, Iowa (population 2300). Schools (K-12), churches, medical care, and groceries are available in West Branch. Iowa City (population 70,000) is located 10 miles west. A diverse community, Iowa City offers excellent medical care, higher education (including 2 and 4 year colleges), cultural, and recreational activities. Housing in West Branch is available, but limited. Housing in Iowa City is plentiful and moderately priced for purchase, but rental property can be limited. Park housing may be available.

TEMP 1039: These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is April-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2018.
Relocation: Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

The incumbent provides front line information and interpretive services for visitors in the daily operation of the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Incumbent performs a variety of duties related to the effective interpretation of the Hoover story, particularly as it relates to the influences on Hoover's life in Iowa and to the operation of the facilities within the National Historic Site. Presents talks and leads tours of the historic core area and/or prairie, providing general information based on the interpretive themes of the Site. Programs/tours are generally 45 minutes to 1 hour and given to small groups of visitors or school groups. Tours cover a specific topic and utilize previously-prepared research and documentation prepared by park staff or others. Develops and presents occasional programs/tours of a more specific nature that are of interest to the employee and are consistent with Site interpretive themes. Operates visitor contact stations at the Visitor Center and the Birthplace Cottage. Greets visitors, provides basic orientation to the Site and local area, provides safety messages, and responds to questions in person and by telephone. Assists in preparing informational publications including brochures, site bulletins, and other printed media, working with other, higher graded staff. Assists with educational programs by presenting programs and guided tours to children, assisting teachers with their visits, and by working with other staff on pre-site and post-site activities. Assists with planning, preparation, and execution of National Park Service sponsored special programs or events, such as Hoover Hometown Days, Christmas Past, and other activities. Uses and maintains audio/visual equipment and other interpretive equipment. Maintains and completes accurate daily visitor statistics. Issues free NPS passes only (Non-fee park) and handles Eastern National sales. Accurately maintains all records according to agency policies and guidelines.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Additional Selections: This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
Rehire Options for 1039's, etc: Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.
Physical Demands: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, adn repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
