The Central Alabama Veteran Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Montgomery HCC, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama, Monroeville, Alabama and Columbus Georgia. The Primary Duty Station for these position are at the Tuskegee Campus. The incumbent may be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

DUTIES:
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is that of a uniformed Police Officer, appointed as law enforcement official under Title 38 of the United States Code, Section 1.218, authorized to carry firearms and make arrests. Officers are assigned to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Organizational Location: The incumbent works directly under the Chief, Police Service while exercising a maximum degree of communication and contact with the physically dispersed shift force (2 campuses). The Training Officer is further responsible for enforcement of all offenses against the criminal laws of the United States, the protection of all property, the protection of all civil rights and preservation of all peaceful environments on all property that is controlled by the Department of Veterans' Affairs from sabotage, espionage, fire and willful damage or destruction. The Training Officer conducts vigorous and inquisitive patrol activities which ensures random patrol patterns, meets special protective service requirements, and provides maximum visibility in corridors, wards, stairwells, building perimeters to prevent the opportunity for crimes such as assaults, or the sale, distribution and use of illegal drugs and the thefts of government and personal property.
Primary Purpose: Incumbent enforces federal and appropriate state criminal codes and VA regulations originating in federal statutes in the physical protection of patients, members, visitors, and employees; the protection of property of the United States government and personal property on the Medical Center grounds: the protection of the Civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property; and in the preservation of the peaceful environment requisite to the operation of the medical treatment programs. He/she will serve as the primary training officer for both campus locations and is also responsible for the complete firearms programs. The training officer will serve as the firearms armorer for the east campus.
The incumbent is assigned as the Training Officer for the Police and Security Service. He/she is responsible for the overall planning, instruction and coordination of VA Police training. The police training program includes but is not limited to: entry level officer training (Phase I), continuing in-service officer training (Phase II), Firearms Training, PR-24 training, OC Training, Defensive Tactics Training, Facility Mandatory Training, administrative duties, computer training, facility access control, and other needs that may arise.
The incumbent will plan, schedule, and conduct training classes. In addition, he/she will provide written reports relevant to training and propose new ideas for the enhancement of the training programs.
The incumbent will review training records for officers and coordinate the scheduling of needed training. He/she will be responsible for maintaining accurate records of all training activities and provide reports of training deficiencies and/or accomplishments to the Chief of Police. The success of the incumbent to disseminate correct and useful information to all members of Police Service is an Integral part of achieving quality and quantity standards within the service.
The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining formalized plans for training, make recommendations to improve training, review new information relevant to training programs, and routinely provide input to the Chief of Police. He/she will provide basic training for Police Service employees in the use of firearms, as well as serve as the armorer. As armorer, the incumbent will ensure that all firearms are maintained within factory specifications, provide advanced cleaning and repair as needed to inventory ammunition, and maintain a service/maintenance file for each weapon.

Supervisory Police Officers/Firearms Instructors are responsible to the Chief, Police & Security Service for the daily operation and monitoring of firearm program. The Firearms Instructor is responsible to ensure, at a minimum, the following are accomplished:

Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: The officer conducts walking and motorized patrol of grounds and parking areas open to the public in all types of weather and walking patrols of the buildings and grounds to detect/prevent criminal activity. The officer responds to alarms, pursues and restrains individuals suspected of committing a crime or mentally/emotionally disturbed persons who are acting in a manner that may injure themselves or others. The work requires regular recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving and similar activities. It is frequently necessary for the officer to respond to incidents in progress, emergencies or alarms in the outlying buildings and he/she has to cover long distances by running in both the pursuit of suspects and response to requests for emergency assistance or alarms from clinics or functions located throughout the facility's grounds.
The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature.
