Located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a tertiary care teaching hospital providing

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Nursing Assistant works as a member of a team of other nursing personnel to provide direct care to inpatients and
outpatients. The NA is assigned to specific patients and duties but not limited to: vital signs including weights and pulse oximetry with
documentation, venipuncture/phlebotomy, acquisition of 12 Lead ECGs, finger stick blood sugar measurements, simple dressing changes,
measuring intake and output, managing/emptying drainage devices, helping the patient to transfer from the bed to a chair and back, toileting,
hygiene, ambulation, changes in position, comfort care, and other direct care related responsibilities. She/he may work in clinics screening
patients preoperatively/pre-procedural (i.e., EKG, phlebotomy, demographic, etc.) under the direction of a physician or midlevel provider in
outpatient clinics.
FUNCTIONS: The Nursing Assistant is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to proficiently carry out assigned patient care based
on the patients' conditions, use judgment in the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments, and complete work/assigned
duties with only a general view of his/her work by a licensed nurse for appropriateness and conformity with certification, policies, and
procedures:
Participates in the health care team, under the direct supervision of the RN or MD/DO, providing a full range of basic nursing care to include but
not limited to: 1) observation and documentation of the patient's response to medication administered; 2) report any changes in the patient's
condition to the RN, LPN or MD/DO.
Interacts with patients, family members, professionals, and other supportive personnel involved in the delivery of patient care. Observes,
identifies, and responds to the patients' needs for nursing, medication, and equipment assisted care and recognizes deviations from normal.
Uses practical knowledge of human behavior, motivations and reactions to situations in working effectively with patients, family, and other staff
members.
Demonstrates, the knowledge, skill and ability to recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations
Work Schedule: 11:30am-12:00pm, with rotating weekends and Federal holidays. Overtime may be required, including
weekends and Federal Holidays.

Physical Requirements: All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required.
May be subject to a one year probationary period.
