Incumbent serves as Training Officer over the training section. Incumbent schedules and conducts training of all required training, including the initial and ongoing weapons training, certifications and re-certifications, informal and formal. In some cases develops instructional content or material in order to accommodate the Service's training needs. Incumbent attends instructor-training classes in policy, procedures, techniques, and updated technology and equipment. Incumbent maintains current and accurate training records, reviews training records and coordinates scheduling of needed training with management. Conducts special studies, compiles and evaluates narrative and statistical data for special management projects and/or for data retrieval, analyzes trends, identifies training deficiencies and using tact and diplomacy, works with officer(s) to resolve. The incumbent prepares reports of training accomplishments and deficiencies to the Deputy Chief of the Service.
Incumbent prepares plans, test examinations, and training units and policies to keep officers familiar with VA regulations, Law Enforcement and Security issues, observes and evaluates the performance of police subordinates during quarterly training sessions, monthly rapid response drills, and during real world situations. Incumbent trains officers in a classroom setting; prepares lectures and handouts, utilizes audio visual equipment as part of this training. Incumbent may utilize the use of guest speakers in keeping officers updated with current technology. Incumbent is responsible for providing all new recruits (Clerical and Police Officers) with requirements from Central Office (Initial Entry Training and Continuous Learning Training); with the operation of all computer systems within the Police Service; and Training on how to operate all Security CCTV and communication systems. The incumbent conducts training to geographically separated units; traveling to CBOCs (may be overnight) to conduct various training, such as Violence in the Workplace Training or Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior Training.

Physical Requirements: The work will require, on a regular basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such climbing multiple flights of stairs, lifting heavy objects, crouching or crawling in restricted areas during pursuit or search activities, defending self and others against physical attack, assisting with injured persons, running while answering alarms, disturbance calls, and walking or standing for prolonged periods of time. The Training Officer will routinely stand on their feet to present classes and provide field training outside the facility. The incumbent must maintain a high state of physical conditioning due to physical confrontations such as restraining patients when control of the patient is beyond the capabilities of the direct patient care staff. Incumbent must be able to provide rapid response to all areas of the Medical Center and after arrival is able to apply the amount of force necessary to quell/control all disturbances; must subdue offenders who resist or try to assault the officer. Threat Training requires the incumbent to participate in force on force training requiring the use of protective equipment which reduces the incumbent's ability to see and breath and exposes the incumbent to be physically struck by a non-lethal projectiles fired from training guns. The incumbent is required to respond to a simulated hostile environment where they are required to use appropriate force to physically strike, block, grab, push, pull run climb and crawl, manipulate the body position of adult males or females which may be vastly different in weight and height.
