The primary purpose of the Nursing Assistant (NA) position is to assist licensed nursing staff in the care of residents/Veterans as a member of the nursing care team by providing Cultural Transformation and holistic resident-.center care in a manner conducive to comfort and safety in the Community Living Center (CLC) at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. The role is to protect, sustain, and nurture the resident and·provide assistance as needed with activities of daily living, and with other needs as required in accordance with established policies and procedures. To assure that the highest degree of resident's quality of life and care is maintained and, to design and implement care that enhances the quality of life of each resident. Resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which .can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. The CLC CNA will embrace the Artifacts of Cultural Change and .patient centered care to provide a home-like environment for residents. This is the full performance level of the position.
Assist in the full range of nursing care for residents with physical, mental health, dementia, and/or behavioral problems in a rehabilitation, long term care, and hospice setting. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse, work is assigned by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines. Provide daily living activities such as assisting residents with daily oral care (dentures, tooth brush), hair grooming, bathing, pericare, dressing, nail, and other related hygiene care. Set up, serve, and assist residents with eating and maintain a home like environment for dining. Turn, move, and transfer residents with appropriate technique and lifting assistance devices (the CLC is equipped with lifting devices that are mandatory to use). Prepare and transports residents as needed for tests or discharge. Assist with restorative, rehabilitation, and activity programs that increase quality of life for each resident.

Physical Requirements: Work requires the Nursing Assistant to spend most of the tour (up to 8 hours per day) on his/her feet with intermittent walking, bending, pushing, pulling and intermittently lifting up to 45 pounds. The employee is required to safely use mechanical devices and proper bo~y mechanics for lifting. The use of a mechanical device is required for all lifting of residents. The employee accepts assignments on an approved tour of duty in the assigned area where service is required. Work requires intermittent positioning and transferring residents in the delivery of resident care, utilizing proper body mechanics at all times. Work requires the ability to use a keyboard to access, input and retrieve information using a computer with keyboard. Work requires finger and hand dexterity adequate to handle and manipulate equipment, stocking of supplies, submitting reports and filing forms. The employee works with different types of personalities and is closely involved with disabled, acute, chronic, and seriously ill residents. He/she must possess stable personality and good mental health and demonstrate cheerfulness, compassion, courtesy, and concern.
Work Environment: The work is performed in a clinical setting, at bedside, offsite, and at a workstation. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts and requires normal safety precautions typical of such places as resident rooms, common resident areas and clinical offices. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The employee has close contact with residents and staff and is therefore exposed to communicable diseases. The employee consistently addresses and assists with resident, family and staff frustrations. There is a potential contact with combative/confused/disoriented residents.
