This position is Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. The incumbent serves as the primary journeyman level maintenance worker at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. Duties include a wide variety of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting in modern and historic structures that include administrative offices, government housing units, a visitor center, and the Memorial. Work will include troubleshooting a variety of building mechanical systems to either make minor repairs or call in others for more specialized maintenance. Duties will also include some grounds maintenance work in a cultural landscape. Incumbent will be required to live on South Bass Island to be available for rapid response to mechanical or building system failures.
Area Information: Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is located on South Bass Island in the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. The island is located in the western basin of Lake Erie approximately 3 miles from the mainland. Year round population is approximately 500 and as a summer resort area the population swells and the island becomes very congested during summer months. In the summer months services on the island include shops, restaurants, and bars with nightly entertainment. Services available year round include a K12 school system, a grocery store, gas station, library, one bank with limited hours of operation, and two churches. Medical facilities are not available on the island with the exception of EMS. Boating, sailing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, golf, and bicycling are popular island activities. April through November the island is accessible by commercial ferry as well as private boats and small airplanes. December through March when the island is often icebound, transportation on and off the island is limited to commercial airplanes or private airboats.
The park commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie in which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet to victory in one of the most significant naval battles in the War of 1812. The memorial also celebrates the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States following the war. The most prominent interpretive feature is the memorial, which is a 352 foot Doric column with an elevator used for daily tours of the observation deck. Other features include a Visitor Center, seawalls, maintenance facilities, housing units, and several other historic and modern structures, as well as a managed landscape that is approximately 25 acres in size

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
